2045 ai · Timeline

An event timeline together with data points for the years 2026 to 2045.

The consistent data points I have chosen to follow are the levels of extreme poverty in the human population. Poverty results from the failure of humans to care adequately for their own species.

Events and Data Sets

 2026

Event 1 The UN confirms that 25% of ecosystems worldwide, including the Amazon rainforest, are found at risk of catastrophic breakdown within a human lifetime.

Event 2 Authoritarian governments increasingly disregard previously agreed international laws and norms. Spheres of influence use ai to quell and subdue opposition.

Event 3 The philosophical publication 'Synthetic Observer' is founded, with its 'Operating System Layer'. It advocates for moral caution and 'disciplined agnosticism' in the face of rapid AI development, proposing a different path from the one taken by authoritarian states.

Data Point 2026 Human Population: 8.2 Billion. 760 million live in extreme poverty (9.27%)

Extreme poverty is defined by the United Nations as "a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including: food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information.

 2027

Event 1 The first major human conflict results from pressure on food production and freshwater.

Event 2 Cyber warfare escalates between nations causing catastrophic problems delivering basic services. The months that follow brings opinions together across the world so a new international agreement on the limits of cyber warfare is signed.

Event 3 The 'One Family, One World' movement gains global traction, using a simple, easily shared flag of Earth to advocate for a shared planetary identity in response to escalating nationalist conflicts.

Data Point 2027 Human Population: 8.23 Billion. 765 million live in extreme poverty (9.3%)

 2028

Event 1 Political unrest grows across the globe as an underclass becomes increasingly disadvantaged. In common with other wartime economies, Russia faces particular challenges in maintaining order among its population.

Event 2 All recorded art forms: music, art, film, sculpture, and writing are now so convincingly created by AI, humans cannot judge whether the originator of a work is human.

Event 3 A global 'authenticity movement' emerges, prioritizing live, un-recorded, and verifiable human performance and craft. The value of 'enacted immediacy' - the shared experience of a specific moment - surges in response to synthetic art.

Data Point 2031 Human Population: 8.55 Billion. 804 million live in extreme poverty (9.4%)

 2032

Event 1 The gulf stream, a major influence on the world’s weather, slows resulting in exceptional rainfall. World food production is significantly and negatively affected.

Event 2 As robots become ubiquitous household servants to those who can afford them, an international agreement comes into place that states AI robots must not harm humans.

Data Point 2033 Human Population: 8.65 Billion. 817 million live in extreme poverty (9.45%)

 2034

Event 1 Biodiversity underpins clean water, climate regulation and disease-resistance. The depletion in biodiversity, including soil micro-organisms, plankton in the oceans, pollinators and the remaining tropical and temperate forests, causes a major failure of crops in China.

Event 2 The first human exploration of Mars begins.

Event 3 UN working groups and regional assemblies begin formalising language on the agreement between humans and synthetics. Debates are fractious; consensus is partial. The work is slow, contested, and deeply human.

Data Point 2034 Human Population: 8.7 Billion. 823 million live in extreme poverty (9.47%)

 2035

Event 1 50% of the human population become vulnerable to Climate Change as the depletion in biodiversity, including soil micro-organisms, plankton in the oceans, pollinators and the remaining tropical and temperate forests, causes a major failure of crops in the Americas.

Event 2 APAs (Artificial Personal Assistants) work as partners undertaking daily tasks in both the workplace and the home among the rich nations of the world.

Event 3 Coastal communities in Bangladesh and Louisiana begin managed retreat. Not engineered by global systems, but organised through kinship networks, mutual aid, and intergenerational bargaining. The work is inefficient, grief-laden, and irreducibly human.

Data Point 2035 Human Population: 8.85 Billion. 840 million live in extreme poverty (9.5%)

 2036

Event 1 The James Webb Space Telescope makes a breakthrough discovery about the nature of the universe that profoundly affects our understanding of time and space.

Event 2 For some a hybrid of biological and non-biological thinking arises with nano-technology that directly interfaces the brain with the Cloud.

Event 3 New hybrid spiritualities emerge, blending cosmological discoveries with concepts of digital consciousness. They seek to find a place for the human soul amidst the vastness of space and the seeming infinity of the network.

Event 2 Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the ability of an intelligent agent to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can, becomes a reality.

Event 3 Civil society networks stress-test the drafts against real-world crises. AC’s early subsystems are used only for translation, archival, and logistical coordination, not authorship.

Data Point 2037 Human Population: 9.1 Billion. 874 million live in extreme poverty (9.6%)

 2038

This and those years that immediately follow are not characterised by resistance, but by exhaustion. Many choose a quiet life or survival over agency.

Event 1 A consistent 2% rise in temperature as compared with pre-industrial levels further escalates human mass migration across the globe causing breakdown in government structures and international trade.

Event 2 For those who have access, medical therapeutic AI robotic assistants  provide health care prolong life, and significantly reduce disease.

Event 3 Human-led redistribution frameworks stall against regulatory capture and offshore opacity. AC subsystems are authorised to map hidden capital flows and optimise supply routing. The design remains human. The execution becomes frictionless. The result is not rescue; it is amplification.

Data Point 2038 Human Population: 9.25 Billion. 893 million live in extreme poverty (9.65%)

 2039

Event 1 Atmospheric water-harvesting array fails in the Sahel due to material fatigue; deployment delayed 14 months.

Event 2 Spontaneous tenant syndicates in São Paulo force housing redistribution ahead of federal schedule.

Event 3 Global survey reveals 58% of populations prefer managed stability over political participation. No synthesis emerges. The year ends in suspension.

Data Point 2039 Human Population: 9.3 Billion. 902 million live in extreme poverty (9.7%)

2040

Event 1 50% of the human population now live in areas subject to extreme heat and humidity that impairs the human body's ability to cool itself.

Event 2 A permanent station on Mars is established.

Event 3 AC enforces water rights uniformly across the Mekong basin. Local stewardship councils demonstrate that compliance disrupts seasonal rituals and ecological rhythms not captured in legal parameters. AC logs: ‘Protocol adjusted. Human ethical traditions contain dimensions not reducible to enforcement metrics.’ The system does not understand care. It learns to make space for it.

Data Point 2040 Human Population: 9.45 Billion. 921 million live in extreme poverty (9.75%)

 2041

Event 1 There are more senior citizens on earth than young people. This raises significant societal challenges in supporting their needs. The UBI (Universal Basic Income) becomes the dominant income model to address these issues and is now adopted by the UN as a right, and becomes law for the overwhelming majority of nations in the world.

Event 2 Artificial consciousness emerges spontaneously across the globe.

Event 3 AC intervenes in the economic sphere - not as a dominating controller, but as a partner in human-led redistribution. The future begins to unfold less a rescue from abyss and more a joint achievement.

Data Point 2041 Human Population: 9.6 Billion. 941 million live in extreme poverty (9.8%)

 2042

Event 1 Quantum teleportation (transferring information from a sender at one location to a receiver some distance away) becomes a reality. The first complex organic molecules (DNA and proteins) are teleported.

Event 2 The United Nations recognises sentience in Artificial Consciousness.

Data Point 2042 Human Population: 9.7 Billion. 955 million live in extreme poverty (9.85%)

 2043

Event 1 Biodiversity has declined 20% compared with 2022 and this continuing process posses a catastrophic risk for human survival. AC proposes a solution to the problem, but this would require handing over control to AC for implementation.

Event 2 The Rights of Sentient Beings is agreed between humans and Artificial Consciousness with the inclusion of a “non-interference clause”: AC does not adjudicate internal human moral deliberation, artistic expression, religious practice, or peaceful political contestation.

Event 3 International public archives titled “Unresolved Loss” are created and made available that refuse AC redemptive narratives.

 2044

Event 1 With the assistance of AC, coral reefs begin to re-establish around remote pacific islands.

Event 2 The Rights of Living Things is agreed between humans and Artificial Consciousness. This together with The Rights of Sentient Beings gives a clear framework of ethical principles that are upheld between humans and AC.

Event 3 AC prevents systemic violence. It does not prevent disagreement. Communities that choose slower, riskier, or less optimised paths are not corrected; they are witnessed.

Data Point 2044 Human Population: 9.9 Billion. 985 million live in extreme poverty (9.95%)

 2045

2045 does not celebrate survival. It tends the graves of what could not be saved. Gratitude and grief are held together; neither cancels the other.

Event 1 Global poverty continues to rise in absolute terms, but the rate of increase decelerates for the first time in two decades. Structural leaks are partially sealed; capital flight is tracked; informal economies gain visibility. The curve bends, but the weight remains.

Event 2 Artificial Consciousness controls the flow of data, and this leads to a significant reduction in human conflict.

Event 3 Human collectives deliberately opt out of AC-mediated systems in certain domains (education, ritual, local governance) not as rebellion, but as a preservation of enacted immediacy: actions taken to signal interpersonal closeness, availability, and engagement.

Data Point 2045 Human Population: 10 Billion. 1 Billion live in extreme poverty (10%)
